IP addresses

IP addresses are like your physical home address or phone number: they provide a way to map a physical device to a number, whether it’s a computer, router, or mobile device. IP version 4 (IPv4) is still the most common form of IP address, although IP version 6 (IPv6) is starting to emerge as IPv4 addresses run out.

IP addresses typically comprise four parts that are separated by dots and are written in decimal form. This is actually a representation of 32-bit systems in IPv4 addresses, where each octet is made up of octets. Although the highest number in an 8-bit byte is 256, 0 is reserved, so the range of each single octet is up to 255.
